Understand Your Skin
What Is VISIA Skin Analysis?
VISIA is a facial imaging system from Canfield Scientific. It uses controlled lighting and consistent positioning to photograph and analyze visible skin features, including pigment, texture, and redness. The images offer a useful baseline for discussing concerns and comparing changes over time.
At Aesthetica by Ashley Howarth MD, VISIA Skin Analysis is complimentary. The assessment gives patients a place to start when choosing skincare or considering a treatment, with recommendations guided by the practice’s medical direction.
A Closer Look
What Does VISIA Measure?
VISIA analyzes eight skin features. Different imaging views help make patterns easier to see; the findings need to be interpreted alongside your history and a skin assessment.
- Spots: visible areas of uneven coloration.
- Wrinkles: lines and creases captured in the image.
- Texture: variations in the smoothness of the skin surface.
- Pores: visible pore openings.
- UV spots: pigment patterns highlighted by ultraviolet photography.
- Brown spots: areas of brown pigmentation.
- Red areas: patterns of redness.
- Porphyrins: fluorescent compounds associated with bacteria in pores.
A skin image does not explain every cause of a concern. Pigmentation, redness, and breakouts still need clinical interpretation; the scan alone does not diagnose a skin condition.

Inside Aesthetica
What VISIA Actually Shows
See VISIA skin analysis in practice at Aesthetica by Ashley Howarth MD. This short film offers a closer look at the imaging experience.
The images are a starting point for a conversation about your skin, your priorities, and the next step in your care.
Medical Direction
From an Image to a Considered Plan
A scan is useful when someone can explain what matters and what to do next. At Aesthetica, Dr. Howarth’s medical direction connects skin assessment with the wider range of care available through the practice.
A concern about brown spots may lead to a discussion of sun protection, topical skincare, or a suitable light or laser treatment. Texture may call for a different approach. Skin sensitivity, prior treatments, time outdoors, and acceptable downtime help determine what fits. The imaging does not automatically make someone a candidate for a laser or peel.
The Aesthetica team performs the assessment within the practice’s care process. Dr. Howarth directs the medical approach; a VISIA appointment does not imply that she personally performs every scan.

Where to Start
Who Can Benefit From a Skin Analysis?
VISIA can be a useful starting point if you are unsure which skincare products to choose, notice uneven tone or texture, or want a baseline before beginning a treatment plan. It can also help structure a follow-up conversation about changes after skincare or treatment.
Tell the team about your main concern, current products, previous procedures, medications, and any recent changes in your skin. Imaging is one part of the assessment. Your skin tone, sensitivity, health history, and goals still guide which treatments may be appropriate.
A changing, bleeding, or non-healing spot needs medical evaluation. Arrange that assessment directly rather than relying on a cosmetic skin scan.

Your Next Step
How VISIA Can Guide Your Skincare Plan
A More Focused Home Routine
Discuss which products serve your goals and where your routine may be unnecessarily complicated. The practice’s skincare shop carries the lines used within its broader approach to skin care.
Facials and Surface Care
For suitable concerns, recommendations may include a customized facial, HydraFacial, or a chemical peel. The choice follows the skin assessment and your priorities.
Light, Laser, or Microneedling
When appropriate, compare BBL HERO, MOXI, or SkinPen microneedling. VISIA supports the discussion; candidacy requires a separate treatment assessment.
A Baseline for Follow-Up
Standardized images can help the team compare selected skin features over time. Follow-up timing depends on the care plan. A visible change in an image or score is considered alongside your experience and clinical assessment.
The Appointment
What to Expect During VISIA Skin Analysis
The appointment combines facial imaging with a conversation about your skin. The scan itself is noninvasive and does not involve injections, exfoliation, or laser treatment.

Share Your Goals
Explain the changes you notice and the products you use. Follow the team’s preparation instructions; makeup and products that obscure the skin may need to be removed for imaging.
Photograph Your Skin
Your face is positioned in the imaging system while photographs are taken under controlled lighting. Consistent positioning helps make later comparisons more useful.
Understand the Findings
Review the images with the team and discuss which concerns matter to you. Recommendations may include a home routine, a treatment consultation, follow-up imaging, or medical evaluation when appropriate.
Understanding the Results
What a VISIA Scan Can and Cannot Tell You
VISIA supports cosmetic skin assessment and tracking. It does not replace an examination, diagnose skin cancer, or predict exactly how your skin will respond to treatment. The team interprets the images in context.
For a Useful Comparison
- Use consistent positioning and imaging conditions.
- Discuss recent sun exposure, products, or treatments that may affect the appearance of your skin.
- Compare images as well as scores.
- Choose follow-up timing around the actual skincare or treatment plan.
Keep the Limits in View
- A score is not a diagnosis or a judgment of overall health.
- A scan cannot guarantee a treatment result.
- Redness and pigmentation may have more than one cause.
- A concerning lesion needs medical assessment even if the scan appears reassuring.
