What is a Rhinoplasty?

Rhinoplasty, sometimes better known as a nose job, is a surgical procedure to improve the appearance of the nose. Common concerns patient’s have that can be corrected with a rhinoplasty include a nose that is too large, wide, pointy, curved, flat, rounded, or any other disproportionate irregularity.

For most patients who undergo a rhinoplasty, an improvement to the nose can make a larger impact on the individuals facial appearance, self-image, and self-confidence. A rhinoplasty can improve the way one looks, but also can functionally improve one’s ability to breathe as well.

The word rhinoplasty comes from the prefix rhin, which means nose, and suffix plasty, which means surgical repair or restoration. A rhinoplasty, therefore, means surgical nose repair, and is a procedure that should be performed by a plastic surgeon. What are the benefits of a Rhinoplasty?

There are both medical and cosmetic benefits to having a rhinoplasty. With medical conditions such as a deviated septum, nasal valve collapse, or turbinate hypertrophy, the natural anatomy of one’s nose makes it very difficult or impossible to breathe through the nose. The medical benefit of a rhinoplasty can be quite significant in restoring a patient’s ability to breathe through the nose, improving ability to sleep, and decreasing nasal congestion.

The cosmetic benefit of a rhinoplasty is improving the shape, size, or proportion of the nose, creating an improved and balanced facial harmony. Imperfections, irregularities, or asymmetries can be addressed and improved. A rhinoplasty can improve a patient’s feeling of self confidence and enhance their overall facial image. Even minor adjustments can create dramatic overall results.

Types of Rhinoplasties

Open rhinoplasty Scottsdale

An open rhinoplasty is the generally the most used technique to obtain ideal reshaping results. In an open rhinoplasty, an incision is made below the nostrils and the skin is lifted providing surgical visibility. Any scarring is hidden at the columella. Dr. Howarth will provide post-operative care instructions to minimize visibility of any scarring.

Closed rhinoplasty Scottsdale

A closed rhinoplasty does not require any external incisions to expose the structures of the nose. The incision is made on the inside of the nose, but surgical access is limited. A closed rhinoplasty is not possible in many applications. Dr. Howarth will utilize the appropriate technique based on the desired outcome of your rhinoplasty.

Ethnic rhinoplasty Scottsdale

Pre-operative planning is key to a successful ethnic rhinoplasty procedure. Dr. Howarth reshapes the nose to meet the desired goal of her patient, while staying consistent with the ethnic background of the individual. An ethnic rhinoplasty will preserve and refine the natural ethnic qualities of the patient.
